カミオカンデが超新星爆発ニュートリノを検出した1987年に発表された「スティル・ライフ」の中には、「チェレンコフ光」というスーパーカミオカンデの検出原理となる現象が登場する。 「彼は手に持った水のグラスの中をじっと見ていた。「何を見ている？」と僕は聞いた。「チェレンコフ光。宇宙から降ってくる微粒子がこの中の原子核とうまく衝突すると、光が出る。それが見えないかと思って」（本文から引用）」
